Social Dance

The dance floor is for everyone
Swingum is a politically and religiously neutral society and welcomes all dancers and music lovers regardless of gender, gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or religion.

Take care of each other
If you harass someone, you will need to leave the premises. Further actions may include being banned or having a police report filed.

Personal boundaries apply
Respect others’ bodies and boundaries. Do not touch someone without permission and stop touching if asked. Each individual shall decide their own boundaries at courses and social dances.

Scents and hygiene
Consider that many are overly sensitive towards strong scents such as perfumes, aftershaves, skin creams and hairsprays. As we dance close to each other, please be considerate in maintaining good hygiene.

Dance safely
Do not perform any acrobatics or lift on the social dance floor – save these for jam circles or competitions, as long as both partners are in agreement about it. Do not perform dips on the social dance floor with anyone who has not explicitly agreed to that.

One more dance?
If you would like another dance, ask “Shall we have another dance?”. In Sweden there is a tradition to dance two songs in a row with each dance partner. However, this is absolutely not an obligation.

You can say no
If someone invites you to dance or asks you for another dance but you don’t want to, say “No, thanks”.

Accept no for an answer
If you invite someone to dance or ask for a second dance and they say no thanks, accept this answer. You may answer “Ok, maybe next time”. Nobody is obliged to dance with anyone else.

If something happens
If something happens during a social dance that you are not comfortable with, speak to one of the responsible dance hosts. If needed, they will take take action and speak to the board.
