Levels

  • A: You already participated a basic lindy hop course and you are familiar to changing place, swingouts and Charleston figures and you want to develop your swing dancing. You have probably danced lindy hop for less than 1 year.
  • B: You have already participated a basic lindy course and several follow-up courses. You are eager about your swing dancing and want to participate everything you can. You are not afraid of getting challenged by technique, figures or musicality.
  • C: You already danced swing for a looong time and participated all classes in your local scene. You probably already visited national or international events, such as Herräng or The Snowball and want even more! At this level, the instructors can suggest you to change to another level, if they think it would fit you better. If you are unsure if this level is right for you – ask your local instructors or an advanced dancer you trust.

Inspiration

This year’s Swingspiration will be on the theme “Inspiration”… and this begins with YOU and your friends! We invite everybody to prepare a little something, maximum 60 seconds, to be performed on Saturday night. It can be anything related to Swing and you decide if you want to go solo, couple or as a team. Remember, it doesn’t have to be good, but it must be short! Send us an e-mail before the weekend, at info@swingum.se, with a heads-up about your participation on this, and if possible, also providing us the music as a sound file.

Teachers

Valérie and Stefan found their access to the world of swing dances through Lindy Hop. Together they have been teaching weekly classes since 2011 and are actively building a strong local scene by offering regular and special classes, organizing social dance events and workshops at their own dance school in Zurich. Both have been addicted to Balboa the first moment they came in contact with this dance. Fascinated by the elegant movements to fast music paired with playful rhythm and foot variations, Balboa cannot be missed from their lives – since it’s not only a dance but more a way of life. In 2014 they got hooked to Collegiate Shag and this energetic dance became the perfect add-on to their existing Balboa & Lindy Hop repertoire. For them being able to adjust and interpret the music with different dance styles is an important skill of a swing dancer. Social dancing has always been a very important aspect for Valérie & Stefan. In their teaching, they concentrate on a balanced mix of technique and having fun paired with focus on leading-following.

Johan “Selle” Selander Selle, as he is called, grew up in Umeå and began teaching Lindy Hop 2012 in Uppsala. Since then, he has visited numerous dance camps as an instructor and dancer. Currently, he teaches in both Uppsala and Stockholm on a regular basis. Selle performs, competes and trains with the MessAround dance group from Uppsala which recently placed third in the ILHC team division, which was held in Washington DC. He has also performed at ESDC, Snowball and Herräng Dance Camp. Selle also created a workshop called U-Town Swing Camp in Uppsala. This year’s edition will take place on 19-21 October and will be arranged by other dancers in Swingkatten. What Selle loves with Lindy Hop is the contact and relation with the partner. The magic that you create together to good jazz music is a great reason for spending so much time on the dance.

Miranda van Wonterghem Miranda loves everything with Lindy Hop and brings her energy, musicality and a big boost of positivism to all the events where she’s involved. Her first dance was blues. It led her to her second great love, Lindy Hop. The addition of Fusion, Balboa and Tango has made her a competent and versatile dancer. Miranda began teaching Lindy Hop and Blues in Amsterdam and has since moved with her passion to Copenhagen. Through her teaching, Miranda gets out of her dance pleasure with others in a fun and inclusive way. For her, the essence of the dance is joy, musicality and the contact she has with her partner.

Travelers

There is an opportunity in the sign-up sheet to host foreign dancers or ask for hosting by a local dancer. We cannot promise any hosting, but will do our best with the “match making” as the registrations arrive.

Umeå is located in northern Sweden and is well connected through train, airplane (UME), ferry, bus (e.g., Y-buss from Stockholm) and asphalt roads (E4 and E12).
